Veterans Day Patent - Modular Prosthesis Cooling Systems

Veterans Day is the day we honor the brave people that have served in the United States military. Many of these veterans have not only served their country through their sacrifice overseas but also with their ideas and inventions. This is the case of Gary Walters, a retired U.S Army Sergeant who lost his right leg during his deployment in Iraq.  Walters started using a prosthetic limb but suffered from the intense heat and discomfort many prosthetic limb users deal with at the point where their limbs meet the prosthesis. [1]

Walters and his team came up with the idea for a Prosthesis Cooling System, U.S. Patent No. 10,561,525. The system includes a lightweight thermoelectric cooling device and a heat dissipation element such as a heat sink or fan. The prosthesis socket includes a heat-conductive layer that de-localizes the cooling effect of the thermoelectric cooling device to provide a larger cooling surface area.

Walters’s invention will not only serve military members that lose their limbs in combat, but also the rest of the 185,000 people in the United States who have an amputation each year.[2] These include people whose limbs were amputated due to traumatic events, vascular diseases, cancer and diabetes. This system will empower prosthesis users to lead the active life they want without the drawbacks of overheating.
